02 / THE STORY

WHO PUT
IT THERE?

ACT I

THE EMPTY SPACE

At the opening of a new gallery show, a banana was taped to a white wall. Before the crowd arrived, it vanished. In its place was the bold PAID mark, held by one strip of silver tape.

ACT II

THE ARGUMENT

The guard called it vandalism. The curator called it a joke. Visitors photographed it, argued over its value, and asked who had put it there. Nobody knew. By closing time, the empty wall had become the busiest room in the gallery.

ACT III

THE MARK REMAINS

PAID never explained itself. Each time someone tried to remove the mark, another appeared somewhere else: beside a blank auction tag, under a velvet rope, on a wall reserved for an artwork that had not yet arrived. The tape could be peeled away; the question it left behind could not.

Comedian PAID is the moment the gallery stops looking at the object and starts looking at its own reaction.
